The Royal Citadel is a bastioned artillery fort located on the Hoe in Plymouth, Devon, constructed from the mid-seventeenth century as a major defensive installation. Built following the Restoration of Charles II, the fortress represents a significant example of post-medieval military architecture designed to protect the strategically important port and anchorage of Plymouth Sound against maritime threats. The citadel incorporates elements from an earlier late sixteenth-century artillery fort and was further enhanced during the eighteenth century, when a statue was installed within its precincts. The site remains an important monument to English coastal defence strategy during a period of considerable naval significance and international rivalry.
