History & Significance

Alasdair MacColla led raiding operations through Kintyre in late 1644, attacking Campbell-held territory in this long peninsula. MacColla had deep personal grievances against the Campbells who had dispossessed his family, and his operations in Kintyre combined military objectives with personal vengeance. Several Campbell townships were burned and livestock driven off.
