Somerled, the mighty King of Argyll and the Isles — progenitor of Clan Donald — sailed up the Clyde with 160 ships and a large army. He was killed, probably by treachery, at Renfrew. His death prevented a Gaelic-Norse kingdom from dominating western Scotland and instead led to the fragmentation of his realm among his sons.
