History & Significance

The Richmond executions of 1570 were part of the systematic and brutal suppression ordered by Elizabeth I. She commanded that a man from every village that had participated in the rising should be hanged. In the end c.450-700 men were executed across the north, far exceeding the actual fighting of the revolt itself. The executions destroyed the traditional power of the northern magnate families.
