After Olaf Guthfrithson death, Edmund moved swiftly to recover the Five Boroughs from Olaf Sihtricson, who had little authority in the Midlands. The Chronicle records Edmund liberation of the Five Boroughs in 942 and preserves a famous poem celebrating it as freeing the Danes from Norse bondage. The poem distinguishes between the Danish-settled Midlands population and their Norse overlords from York and Dublin.
