History & Significance

At Horncastle, the Lincolnshire rising turned violent when the mob seized and killed William Raynes, the chancellor of the Bishop of Lincoln, and Thomas Wolsey the royal receiver. The Horncastle muster on 3-4 October 1536 produced the largest single gathering in Lincolnshire before the march on Lincoln, with perhaps 8,000 men assembling. The murders at Horncastle sharpened Henry VIII's determination to punish the ring-leaders.
