The Battle

History & Significance

One of several skirmishes fought as Lord Russell's royal army advanced along the Exeter road. The rebels used the river crossings as natural defensive positions, contesting each one as they fell back toward Exeter. Fenny Bridges was one of the more contested crossing points. The accumulated losses from these sequential engagements weakened rebel military strength before the decisive battles at Clyst.
