The Battle

History & Significance

When Bigod's revolt began, Cumberland and Westmorland erupted in support. Norfolk, commanding the royal army in the north, moved with unusual speed and ferocity. At Carlisle, Henry VIII specifically ordered that the executions be conducted as publicly and dramatically as possible — monks were to be hanged from church steeples. The 74 executions at Carlisle were intended to terrorise the north into permanent submission. They largely succeeded.
