History & Significance

In the aftermath of Hatfield Chase where Edwin was killed, his son Eadfrith surrendered to Penda and was later killed by him despite his submission. Penda also killed another of Edwin's sons. The deliberate killing of Edwin's heirs showed Penda's determination to permanently destroy the Deiran line.
