Following his victories at Tempsford and in East Anglia in 917, Edward the Elder received the submission of the Danish garrison of Northampton. The town controlled the Nene crossing on the route between the southern Danelaw and the Midlands, making its acquisition strategically vital. Edward then fortified Northampton as part of his developing chain of controlled boroughs in the reconquered Midlands.
