The Battle

History & Significance

David I invaded England in support of his niece Empress Matilda's claim to the throne. His Scottish and Galwegian army was routed by English archers despite desperate bravery. Paradoxically David I used the defeat as leverage to negotiate the Treaty of Durham — gaining Northumberland for Scotland anyway.
