History & Significance

Semi-legendary battle in which a Scottish farmer named Hay and his sons, armed only with ox-yokes, turned a routing Scottish army and achieved victory. The Hay family were supposedly granted lands and their family became the Earls of Erroll, hereditary High Constables of Scotland. The story may be legendary but the battle against Danish raiders is plausible.

Forces Involved

Scots: c. 2,000–4,000. Danes: c. 2,000–3,500.
