The Battle

History & Significance

The Boroughmuir engagement of 1335 was part of the complex guerrilla warfare that characterised the Second War of Independence in the vicinity of Edinburgh. While Edinburgh Castle remained in English hands, Scottish forces dominated the surrounding countryside. The engagement demonstrated the growing Scottish ability to contest control of the Lothians, a key theatre that would eventually tip toward Scotland with the recovery of Edinburgh Castle in 1341.
