History & Significance

The Antonine Wall was occupied — with at least one temporary abandonment and reoccupation — for about twenty years before being finally given up around 163 AD under Marcus Aurelius. Archaeological evidence shows several forts were attacked and destroyed. The Antonine system required more troops than Britain could spare and was ultimately unsustainable. The withdrawal back to Hadrian's Wall was Rome's acknowledgement that Scotland could not be held.

Forces Involved

Romans/tribal forces variable; sporadic engagements c. 500–2,000 each side.
