History & Significance

When Edward took Stamford he built a second burh on the north side of the River Welland, the twin to an existing Danish fort. The Chronicle records the garrison of the north burh and the Danes who had previously been under Danish rule all submitted. Stamford was the most southerly of the Five Boroughs and its capture in 918 was the beginning of the final phase of Five Borough recovery.
