History & Significance

Aethelflaed established Shrewsbury as a Mercian burh and translated the relics of St Alkmund from Lilleshall to establish a minster that would serve as a focus for Mercian identity. Shrewsbury on its loop of the Severn was a naturally strong defensive position and became one of the most important Mercian boroughs in the Welsh Marches. The religious dimension of burh foundation, centred on saints relics, was a consistent feature of Aethelflaed policy.
