History & Significance

Dussindale in August 1549 was the decisive battle of the social conflicts of 1549. The German and Italian mercenaries hired by the government proved militarily overwhelming against the rebel foot. The scale of killing was greater than any English civil battle since Flodden. It ended Kett's rebellion and with it any prospect of social reform. Northumberland used his victory to displace the Lord Protector Somerset.
