The Battle

History & Significance

In his second season Frontinus extended the offensive westward into the Glamorgan and Gwent heartland, reducing hillfort after hillfort with methodical artillery-and-assault technique. He established auxiliary forts at key valley junctions — Y Gaer (Brecon), Penydarren, Gelligaer — to hold conquered territory over winter. The Silures, thinned by a generation of war and now systematically deprived of highland refuges, began to fragment.
