The Battle

History & Significance

Edgar mac Malcolm, another of the English-educated sons of Malcolm III, invaded Scotland in 1097 with the backing of William Rufus of England and under the military command of Edgar the Atheling. Donald Ban was defeated, captured and blinded -- the traditional punishment for a deposed king that prevented him from ruling again. Edgar's victory finally ended the succession conflict that had wracked Scotland since 1093, establishing the Canmore dynasty firmly on a pro-Norman course. Donald Ban was the last king buried on Iona.
