History & Significance

Aethelflaed, the "Lady of the Mercians," raided the crannog (lake dwelling) at Llangorse Lake in Brycheiniog, Wales. The Welsh queen and thirty-three companions were taken prisoner. The Llangorse crannog was a remarkable royal residence — archaeological excavation has revealed high-status finds. This Mercian raid into the heart of south Wales demonstrates that Welsh kingdoms faced threats from all directions. The crannog site is the only known example in Wales.
