History & Significance

Agricola advanced across the Forth and penetrated as far north as the Tay in his third campaign season. Tacitus says he encountered new peoples who had never been seen by Rome before. The Romans constructed forts across the Forth-Clyde line, effectively creating a proto-Antonine Wall. Agricola was reported to be tempted to cross to Ireland (he had an Irish exile with him who said one legion could conquer it).
