History & Significance

Suetonius specifically records that Vespasian conquered the Isle of Wight (Vectis) during his southwestern campaign. The island may have served as a supply base or refuge for British resistance. Its capture secured Roman control of the Solent and the approaches to the major harbour at Chichester (Noviomagus), where the client king Togidubnus operated.
