History & Significance

Burgh Castle (Gariannonum) in Norfolk commanded the southern shore of the Breydon Water estuary, protecting the approaches to the Yare, Bure, and Waveney rivers against Saxon raiders. Its massive walls — still standing to over 3 metres in places — were built with external bastions to mount artillery for anti-ship fire. Its garrison of Stablesian cavalry is recorded in the Notitia Dignitatum.
