The Battle

History & Significance

After Halfdan's death, the Danish host in York was without a clear leader. According to the Historia de Sancto Cuthberto, the Lindisfarne community's abbot Eadred brokered the election of Guthred — a former slave — as king, cementing a church-Danish alliance that gave the Cuthbert community lands and protection. This episode illustrates how the Viking occupation of Yorkshire was negotiated as well as fought, and how the northern church navigated Danish rule.
