The Battle

History & Significance

Sir William Waller captured Winchester city in September 1644 following his victory at Cheriton in March. The Royalist garrison of the city retreated into Winchester Castle but the city itself fell, providing Parliament with control of the Hampshire county town. Waller used Winchester as a base for operations in Hampshire but was unable to take the castle which continued to resist until 1645.
