History & Significance

After weeks of siege at Buttington, the Danish force was starved into attempting a breakout. They fought across the Severn to the east bank but were cut down in large numbers by the waiting English and Welsh forces. The Chronicle records great slaughter. Many of those who escaped returned to Essex, their fighting capacity shattered. This phase of Buttington is distinct from the initial siege investment and represents the actual pitched combat.
