The Mercian Register records further fortification work at Shrewsbury in 914 as part of Aethelflaed comprehensive programme of strengthening the Mercian frontier before the offensive into the Five Boroughs. Shrewsbury on its loop of the Severn was the key crossing point into mid-Wales and its fortification was essential for securing the western flank of the Mercian advance northward.
