The Battle

History & Significance

Ealdorman Eanwulf of Somerset and Ealdorman Osric of Dorset with Bishop Ealhstan fought a Viking force at the mouth of the River Parrett and made great slaughter. This Somerset and Dorset defensive action against a Viking incursion into the Somerset Levels showed the local ealdorman system of defence working effectively.
