Edward captured Bedford from the Danes and fortified it as a burh in 914. Bedford was a major Danish borough on the Ouse and its capture opened the route into the eastern Midlands. The Chronicle records the Danes of Bedford submitted and Edward garrisoned the town. A second burh was later built on the south bank. Bedford control was a key step in dismantling the Danish boroughs north of the Thames.
