Bedford had been fortified as a burh under Edward the Elder as part of the defensive line against Danish East Anglia. In 915 a Danish raiding force attacked Bedford but was repulsed by the garrison. The town\'s survival was important strategically as it controlled the Great Ouse crossing and formed a link in the chain of burhs Edward used to gradually constrict and then reconquer the Danelaw.
English: Bedford burh garrison. Danish: East Anglian raiding force
