History & Significance

The establishment of the legionary fortress at Isca Dumnoniorum represents the formal military pacification of the Dumnonii. Excavations at Exeter have produced extensive evidence of the Neronian-era fortress which later became the civitas capital. The location at the lowest crossing of the Exe river and junction of several valleys was strategically optimal.
