The Battle

History & Significance

The revolving kingship of Jorvik in the early 950s saw Eric Bloodaxe expelled and restored multiple times. The Northumbrian nobility alternated between Norse-Irish candidates and Eric, as each faction sought advantage. The complex politics of Jorvik in these years shaped the character of Viking York — cosmopolitan, commercially sophisticated, but politically unstable. Eric's final restoration in 952 set the stage for his death at Stainmore in 954.
