The Battle

History & Significance

Bedford was one of the Danish burhs of the Danelaw captured by Edward the Elder in his systematic reconquest. After taking it, Edward fortified the town as an English burh — part of the defensive network that would be used against future Danish incursions. Bedford's capture and refortification secured the Ouse valley and opened the route into East Anglia.
