The Battle

History & Significance

Wyatt's army reached London and advanced to Ludgate, where he reportedly sat exhausted on a bench and was persuaded to surrender. The episode illustrated both how close the rebellion came to success and why it ultimately failed — Wyatt had no real plan for what to do if London did not rise spontaneously. Mary I's bravery in staying in London and making a famous speech at the Guildhall had stiffened citizen resistance. Wyatt was executed in April 1554.
