The Battle

History & Significance

The recurring dispute between the MacKintoshes (as feudal superiors) and the MacDonalds and Camerons of Lochaber over rent payment and superiority rights was one of the most persistent sources of Highland violence. The Camerons simply refused to pay and backed their refusal with steel. MacKintosh expeditions to collect were regularly repelled. Government arbitration repeatedly failed to impose settlement.
