The Battle

History & Significance

After regrouping in Essex following the Buttington defeat, the Danish army struck north and west again, seizing the abandoned Roman walled city of Chester as a winter base. Chester was one of the most extensive Roman fortifications in Britain and provided ready-made defences. Aethelred of Mercia responded by implementing a scorched earth policy, denying the Danes all food and fodder in the surrounding area.
