History & Significance

Rebel forces under Robert Aske and William Stapleton captured Hull in October 1536 after the garrison capitulated. Control of the port gave the pilgrims access to a major supply base and cut royal communications along the Yorkshire coast. The town was held for several weeks before the truce with Norfolk.
