The Battle

History & Significance

In the hours and days following Montrose's victory at Auldearn on 9 May 1645, Royalist cavalry under the Gordon horse pursued the routed Covenanting army of General Urry across Moray. The pursuit resulted in heavy Covenanting casualties beyond those suffered on the battlefield itself, as exhausted and panicked foot soldiers were overtaken by Gordon cavalry across the Moray plain.
