History & Significance

The government barracks at Bernera in Glenelg held out against Jacobite-aligned clans during the 1719 rising. The barracks at Bernera were part of the chain of military installations built after 1715 to control the western Highlands. Their survival during the 1719 rising demonstrated the value of this infrastructure — preventing the Jacobites from fully dominating the Glen Shiel area.
