The Earl of Bothwell conducted a daring raid on Falkland Palace in June 1592, attempting to seize James VI. Bothwell was under charges for witchcraft and had been living as a fugitive. His men surrounded the palace and briefly occupied its grounds. James VI escaped by hiding in a closet while loyal servants delayed the raiders. Bothwell's men withdrew before an adequate royal response could be mounted. The Falkland raid demonstrated that James VI was physically vulnerable even within his own palaces and contributed to the king's famous personal timidity.
