History & Significance

The kingdom of Lindsey (Lincolnshire) was a repeatedly contested borderland between Northumbria and Mercia. Roman Ancaster was a significant nodal point on Ermine Street. Various chronicles record fighting in this region throughout the seventh and eighth centuries without always naming specific battles. Lindsey changed hands between Northumbria and Mercia multiple times before being permanently absorbed into Mercia.
