Forfar Castle in Angus was seized by English forces during Edward I's northern march through Scotland in 1296. As the principal royal castle of Angus, its occupation was essential to English control of the rich agricultural lowlands north of the Tay. Forfar was later recovered and demolished by the Scots during Bruce's recovery of Angus in 1308, following the pattern of rendering fortifications useless to prevent future English re-occupation.
