History & Significance

After the main Battle of Auldearn, Alasdair MacColla led a savage pursuit of the fleeing Covenanting forces. The Irish troops under MacColla were particularly fierce in the pursuit. The total casualties at Auldearn were extraordinarily high — possibly 2,000 Covenanters killed, many in the flight rather than the battle itself. Contemporary accounts emphasise the savagery of the aftermath.
