History & Significance

Mousehold Heath overlooking Norwich became the main camp of Kett\'s Rebellion for six weeks. At its peak, an estimated 16,000 rebels occupied the heath, conducting something approaching a parallel government under the Oak of Reformation. The rebels drew up demands including restrictions on enclosure, reform of the clergy and reduction of rents. They held courts and dispensed justice. The camp was supplied by foraging across Norfolk and was formidably positioned, controlling the routes into Norwich from the north and east.

Forces Involved

Rebel: up to 16,000 at peak, mostly Norfolk agricultural workers, with some minor gentry. Royal: Norwich city guard and later Lord Northampton\'s force
