History & Significance

Long before the formal proscription of 1603, the MacGregors were notorious as cattle raiders and were subject to periodic punitive expeditions by neighbouring powerful lords. The Stewarts of Atholl conducted a campaign against MacGregor raiding parties in Rannoch and Atholl in 1550. Such expeditions were regular but rarely produced lasting peace as the dispossessed MacGregors had little choice but to raid for survival.
