Battle of Skitten Mire was an early medieval pitched battle between opposing field armies, fought at Caithness, Scotland in 976. Ljot Thorfinnsson, Jarl of Orkney prevailed over Skuli Thorfinnsson (supported by Macbeth, Mormaer of Moray). Ljot defeated and killed his brother Skuli, but was himself mortally wounded and died of his wounds shortly afterwards; Hlodvir Thorfinnsson then succeeded as Jarl of Orkney.
The site of Battle of Skitten Mire lies on Middle Old Red Sandstone (Undifferentiated), bedrock that formed in the Middle Devonian. The rock here is conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone and mudstone.
