The Battle

History & Significance

After expelling the Norse-Irish king Guthfrith from York, Athelstan summoned all the kings of Britain to Eamont Bridge near Penrith where they submitted to his overlordship. Constantine II of Scotland, Owain of Strathclyde, and Hywel Dda of Wales all attended. This gathering established Athelstan's claim to be the first king of all England — and arguably of all Britain. The military force that backed this diplomacy was the crushing power of his southern English host.
