History & Significance

Bishop Rowland Lee as President of the Council of Wales and the Marches conducted armed enforcement raids into the borderland to suppress Welsh lawlessness. Lee was notorious for his harsh methods; he reputedly hanged nearly 5,000 felons in his nine-year presidency. In 1536 he led armed parties into Montgomeryshire and the upper Severn valley, pursuing cattle raiders and criminals who operated across the Welsh-English border with impunity.
