The Battle

History & Significance

Sir George Bowes held Barnard Castle for the crown against rebel forces from the Northern Rising. The castle was besieged for eleven days; desertions reduced the garrison from over 700 to 226 before Bowes made a fighting sortie and negotiated surrender. It was the most dramatic siege of the rising.
