Harlech Castle was built (1282–89) by Edward I as part of his Iron Ring of fortresses encircling Gwynedd. Its near-impregnable cliff-top position and sea-gate (allowing resupply by ship even under siege) made it a key instrument of English control. It would later play a pivotal role in the Glyndŵr revolt and Wars of the Roses.
